Did you know that the linen stitch is also the same stitch as the moss stitch or the granite stitch? All 3 of these stitches are worked exactly alike and produce the same results. But for this post, I’m going to refer to it as the linen crochet stitch.
The linen stitch is made up by alternating single crochets and chain stitches. After the foundation row, you will just keep working the same repeat row until your piece is the size that you would like it to be.
This is actualy one of my favorite crochet stitches that I have learned so far! It’s so simple yet produces such a pretty looking texture.
Overview of the Linen Crochet Stitch
The linen stitch is made with a 1 row repeat and is a super easy stitch to do! It is made up of single crochet stitches and chain stitches. If you can crochet these 2 basic stitches, then you can crochet the linen stitch. This is a great stitch for beginner crocheters.
You basically single crochet in the chain spaces of each row and it creates the linen stitch.
The yarn that I’m using in this picture is Lion Brand Mandala Ombre yarn. It is a super smooth yarn that works up beautifully. This color is called happy and no wonder with all the vibrant colors in it!
Different ways to crochet the linen stitch
Did you know that there are different ways to crochet the linen stitch in such as in a square, rectangle or corner to corner? You don’t have to just to a flat, back and forth piece. You can scroll on down for the normal linen stitch tutorial or you can check out one of these other tutorials
One of my favorite ways to practice learning a new stitch is to make a small project like a washcloth with that new stitch. I actually have a pattern for Moss Stitch Washcloths (remember the linen stitch is the same as moss stitch).
You can check out this very simple pattern for washcloths IN THIS POST!
I even made a temperature blanket with linen stitch squares a couple of years ago! It was the perfect stitch to do for a temperature blanket and I love how it turned out!

Linen Stitch Q & A

- H / 5.00mm Crochet Hook (the size I’m using)

- Scissors
- Stitch Markers (optional)
Abbreviation / Stitch Key:
- ch = chain
- mc = magic circle / magic ring
- st = stitch (es)
- sk = skip
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- sp = space
- yo = yarn over
- t = turn
Notes:
- You can adjust the starting chain to any length by simply chaining any even number of stitches
- ch 2 at beginning of row counts as a stitch
How to Crochet the Linen Stitch
The foundation chain can be any even number of stitches, I chained 14 for this sample
Row 1: sc in 4th chain st from hook, *ch 1, sk next stitch, sc in the next* repeat * to * across to last stitch
Row 2: ch 2, t, sk st, sc in 1st ch sp, * ch 1, sk st, sc in next ch-1 sp* repeat * to * across to end of row ending with a sc in the turning ch from previous row
Continue repeating row 2 for as many rows as you’d like. And that is how easy it is to crochet the linen stitch! Just using 2 basic crochet stitches like the single crochet and chain stitch can produce such a pretty outcome!
