This Chunky Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern is perfect if you are wanting a super quick and easy crochet project!  It is such an easy pattern that it would be great for even beginner crocheters to make.

Maybe you have waited until the last minute and need the perfect baby gift for a baby shower by the weekend, no worries!  This chunky crochet baby blanket pattern works up in just a few hours with chunky yarn.

When I say that this pattern is easy, I’m not kidding. It uses such simple stitches!  It uses mostly chain stitches and double crochet stitches.  It also uses single crochet stitches if you add them around your blanket for a border.

Pairing a handmade baby blanket with a little hat and pair of booties makes for the perfect gift whether you need a present for a baby boy or a baby girl!  I think that handmade items make for such special gifts, especially on occasions like a new baby being born.

I personally love crocheting baby items!  They are so quick and fun to make.

Special Stitch I Used for This Blanket

I used a fun stitch called the Corner to Corner stitch for this blanket and it turned out great!  This stitch is also referred to C2C crochet.

This stitch is crocheted just like the name implies, you start in one corner and work the blanket diagonally across until you reach the other side.  It uses basic crochet stitches like chain stitches and double crochet stitches.

If you want a full, in depth tutorial for this stitch, then be sure to check out the written, picture and video tutorial for it HERE!  I do have pictures in this pattern below, but if you’d like to watch the video or see it in more of a step by step process, go check out that tutorial and then come back here to crochet this fun chunky baby blanket!

Pair this stitch with a chunky yarn and you have a super quick and easy, chunky crochet blanket pattern!

I love taking a striped of multi color yarn, such has Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn (in stripes or ombre) and working this stitch with them.  They make for pretty and super easy blankets that make the perfect baby shower gift.

Can You make Any Size of Blanket With This Pattern?

You can easily modify this pattern to make any baby blanket size that you would like.  If you want to make it bigger, simply keep increasing until the bottom of it measures the desired width that you are wanting and then you can begin decreasing.

Just keep in mind that if you make the blanket larger than I did, you will be needing additional yarn to finish your blanket.

Another fun detail about this blanket is that you can also turn it into a rectangular blanket.  I made mine as a square blanket, but the corner to corner stitch can easily be turned into a rectangle.  Check out my C2C Tutorial to see how to decrease in a rectangle!

Supplies You Will Need for This Free Pattern

Of course, we know that you will need some yarn!  I chose to use Big Twist Plush yarn in the color Varg Pastel.  It is a #6 super bulky weight yarn that works up so fast and makes for a beautifully textured baby blanket.  It makes for such soft and plush chunky crocheted blankets.

Big Twist Chunky Baby Blanket Yarn

I loved using this fun, multicolor yarn, but you could easily make one in a solid color if you prefer.

You will also need a larger sized crochet hook.  I used a M/N / 9.0mm crochet hook to work with this yarn.  This size hook works really well with this yarn and for making the stitch pattern of this blanket.

Then you will just need a pair of scissors and a yarn needle.

Yarn Substitutions

I know that a lot of people are going to be wondering what other yarns that they can use in place of the Big Twist Plush yarn.  As long as the yarn is a super bulky yarn, it will work great for this easy crochet baby blanket pattern.

Another great brand of yarn that immediately comes to my mind when I think about wanting a yarn that is similar to the Big Twist Yarn is Bernat Baby Blanket Yarn or their Super Soft Bernat Blanket Yarn.  These yarns are really close in texture and the size of the Big Twist yarn.

If you are wanting to make more of a velvet blanket that is so soft and plush, Bernat Velvet Yarn would be a great choice.  You may just want to do a few more rows than suggested because it is a #5 bulky weight yarn instead of a super bulky #6 yarn.

Different Weights of Yarn Substitutions

You may be wondering if you could use a different weight of yarn for this crochet baby blanket other than the super bulky weight yarn?  And, Yes, I’d definitely say that this would also be a super easy pattern to adapt with any other yarn weight.  You can also easily make a different size blanket with this pattern by simply using a different weight of yarn and size of crochet hook.

Whether you are wanting to use a thinner yarn like light weight or dk weight yarns,  worsted weight or even a bulky weight yarn, simply read the back of the label and find the correct hook size for that specific type of yarn and use this pattern (just increase until you reach the desired width) for an easy baby blanket!

Because this pattern works up using easy stitches like double crochet stitches, it tends to work up pretty fast so even using a smaller weight of yarn such as a worsted weight. It will still be a pretty fast crochet project.
