Want to be able to make pumpkins really fast? Then you will want to learn how to make pumpkins with an Addi knitting machine! Of course, you can make these pumpkins with any brand or size of knitting machine as the method will be the same.
I timed myself to see exactly how long it took me to completely finish a pumpkin on my knitting machine. Using my 22 pin Addi, it took me right under 17 minutes from start to finish to complete a pumpkin.
These little pumpkins make for the cutest fall decor and they would also make for a great item to sell at fall craft markets!
Is it hard to make pumpkins with a knitting machine?
No, it is actually pretty easy to make pumpkins with a knitting machine! Once you have learned a few basic things about using a knitting machine such as casting on and binding off, you will have a whole bunch of pumpkins made in no time.
Where to buy a knitting machine
I have bought all of my knitting machines off of Amazon. Some craft stores also will have different brands of knitting machines.
I have used both Sentro brand knitting machines and Addi knitting machines and favor the Addi far more than the Sentro. I don’t have problems with my Addi skipping stitches or anything like I did with my Sentro.
The Addi comes in 2 sizes a 46 pin and a 22 pin.
If someone were to ask me if it was worth the extra money to get an Addi, I’d say it definitely was and I don’t regret it at all!
Here is the size difference between a pumpkin made on the 46 pin and 22 pin machines.
Supplies you will need to make knitting machine pumpkins
Aside from a knitting machine, you will need just a few other supplies to make your pumpkins like
- Worsted weight yarn
- Poly-Fil
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Something for the stem (if you don’t crochet it) like a cinnamon stick, leather tag or a small stick
- A crochet hook (if you choose to crochet the stem)
Any worsted weight yarn that works in your knitting machine will work for this pattern. For my pumpkins I used I Love This Yarn. This yarn always works great in my Addi. I used the colors burnt pumpkin, desert glaze and terra cotta for my pumpkins.
Some of the steps are easier to explain in a video. The picture and written tutorial is still down below if you prefer that too.
How to Make Pumpkins With a Knitting Machine
You can use any size of knitting machine to make these pumpkins. I’m going to be using my 22 pin Addi for this tutorial.
Casting on
To cast on to your knitting machine and start your pumpkin, place your yarn in front of the first pin on the machine and behind the second pin. Repeat around by going in front of the next pin and behind the next one.
After you have went all the way around your machine, place your working yarn into the yarn holder and knit.
I knit 70 rows for my small pumpkin on my 22 pin Addi and I knit 90 rows for my big pumpkin on my 46 pin Addi.
Casting Off
After you have knit all your rows for your pumpkin, you can cast off your piece.
Cut your yarn leaving a long tail. Put your yarn in the middle of the machine and crank and go around the machine for almost 1 more round but leave a couple pins before completing the round, if you go too far you will drop stitches.
Place the yarn tail on your yarn needle and pick up all the stitches around starting with the first pin and working toward the left.
After you pick up all the stitches, your piece will now look like a long tube. Gently stretch the piece.
Take one end of the piece and pull it through the middle to double the piece. Gently pull the tails of each end and close them. Knot the ends and weave them in.
Cut a long piece of yarn, probably around 18” and go through the stitches on the open end to gather them so you can cinch the top of the pumpkin closed but don’t pull it closed yet.
You can now stuff your pumpkin with poly fil. Don’t over stuff it and it helps if you can kinda hollow out the middle of the stuffing with your fingers.
Pull the tail of yarn and close the top of the pumpkin. You will know squish your pumpkin in the middle and insert the yarn needle through the middle of the pumpkin, come out and go back through the middle to create the ridges. You will do this 5 or 6 times.
You can now add your pumpkin stem. If you choose to use a piece of cork or wood, you can hot glue it to the top of the pumpkin. I chose to crochet my stem and here is how I did that
Stem
With a 5.00mm crochet hook and worsted weight green yarn,
Small pumpkin stem –
ch 10 st, 3 sc in 2nd ch st from hook and in each ch st down. Leave a long tail to attach to pumpkin.
Large pumpkin stem –
ch 15, 3 hdc in 2nd ch st from hook and in each ch st down. Leave a long tail to attach to pumpkin.
Once you have made your stems, you can attach them to your pumpkins. Weave all ends in and enjoy!
