Things to Keep in Mind –

When choosing a color scheme for your temperature blanket, here are a few things to keep in mind

  1. Choose colors that make you happy! This is a project that you will be working on for a whole year, so choose colors that you really like and not just ones that are aesthetically pleasing because if you don’t love them, you won’t want to finish your blanket.
  2. Temperature blankets can be any colors that you want them to be. They can be the traditional rainbow type colors that start with blues and ends with red tones OR you can totally mix things up and go from green tones to blue. Find a color scheme that matches your living room or anything! The main point in a temperature blanket is to show the difference in everyday for a year and that can be accomplished with any color scheme.

How much Yarn will I need?

This is a good question. Since this is a temperature blanket it will be depending on the weather, which no one can predict, lol. It can be very hard to gauge how much yarn you will need in each color, so I’d say to at least have 2 skeins on hand of each color for a start and you can always order more as you go along.

I’d definitely stick with Brands of yarn that have been around and are common. I wouldn’t buy hand dyed or specialty yarns for this project as they could get discontinued halfway through the project and you may not be able to find that yarn.

How often do I change colors?

This will depend on the weather, of course. Typically it can be every 8-10 degrees, but depending on where you live and your weather it can differ greatly.

  1. Thanks for putting so much information together! I’m going to crochet a chevron pattern temperature blanket for my sister. She lives in the Midwest so I will have a huge temperature range. I’m excited and home my basic crochet skills are up to the task.

Now I just have to find yarn

  2. This is my first year to make a temperature blanket. Here it is, August 21, 2023 and I haven’t even started. I have my yarn, but that’s it. I’m glad I get emails from you, because I haven’t been sure what stitch I wanted to use. I’ve decided that I’m going to do the Granny Square. I’m also going to attach a coordinating button on the round for a holiday in that month. I.E. A balloon for January 1st, a heart on the February 14th row, a shamrock in March, along with balloons for 3 different birthdays in March. For April I was thinking an umbrella. Wedding rings on wedding days. Etc. Making the squares instead of rows, will make it easier for my granddaughter (9) and grandson (6 1/2, 7 on Jan. 5)
to make out each individual month. Thanks you for your ideas, from Wisconsin !!

  3. Thank you for making a chart that covers my area’s temp range! (-7C to 45C)
Looking forward to completing a temp blanket in 2024 😊
