Crochet dishcloths are the perfect project to make if you have some cotton yarn.  This simple dishcloth crochet pattern is a super quick and easy project to make anytime, plus it is a free pattern.

Who knows, you may even learn a new crochet stitch with this simple pattern.  This free crochet pattern for dishcloths uses a fun stitch called the moss stitch.

Washcloths are a great project if you are wanting something that works up quickly and doesn’t take much yarn to make.  They are the perfect project for crochet beginners too!

If you are wanting a super easy washcloth pattern that is perfect for beginner crocheters, you might want to check out my Double Crochet Free Crochet Washcloth Pattern.  It is made with basic stitches like chains and double crochet stitches.

But, don’t think that this isn’t an easy crochet washcloth pattern because it is.  This is an easy pattern that consists of a 1 row repeat row. 

What Yarn is Best for Crocheting Dishcloths?

Cotton yarn is always going to be the best choice for making crochet dishcloths with!  It is very durable and holds up extremely well even after being used time and time again.

I’ve seen some people ask if they can use acrylic yarn to make dish cloths with and the answer would be no.  Acrylic does not absorb water or hold up as well as cotton.  So, cotton yarn will be your best yarn choice to make this simple dishcloth pattern with.

I used I Love This Cotton from Hobby Lobby and it’s a great worsted weight #4 cotton yarn.  Any worsted weight, 100% cotton yarn will work great for this free crochet dishcloth pattern, but some of my favorites are

Which Crochet Stitch is Best to Use to Make Crochet Dishcloths?

There are many fun crochet stitches that you can use to crochet dishcloths, but one of my favorite and easiest stitches to use is the moss stitch.  The moss stitch makes for an easy crochet dishcloth pattern that looks good with both solid and multi color yarns.

The moss stitch consist of basic crochet stitches like single crochet stitches and chain stitches.  You really can’t have an easier stitch pattern than that. 

What are the Differences Between a Dishcloth and Washcloth? 

​Basically, there is no difference between a crocheted washcloth and crocheted dishcloths, it is just the way that they are used that is different.  

Dishcloths tend to be used for washing dishes and are more often found in the kitchen, while washcloths are more commonly used to wash your face ad body and can be found in the bathroom.

But, the patterns used to make them both can be and are always the same.  Different stitches and stitch combinations can produce both washcloths and dishcloths.

If you have lots of cotton yarn laying around and get into a kick of making washcloths, you may start wondering what you will do with all them.  Not only are they great to use for washing dishes, you can also use them to wash your face and body.

Another great way to help make your dishcloth stash smaller is to give them away as gifts. Washcloths make for great gifts, especially when paired with some fancy bars of soap or even handmade soaps.  Make a set of 4 washcloths each in a coordinating different color and pair them with soap for the perfect gift.

Finished Size:

  • Each dishcloth measures approx. 7.5” x 7.5”

Abbreviation / Stitch Key:

Pattern –

ch 32 st

Row 1: sc in 4th st from hook, *ch 1, sk next st, sc in the next* repeat * to * across.

Row 2 – 30: ch 2, t, sc in 1st ch sp, * ch 1, sc in next ch sp* repeat * to * across.

For the Border

ch 1, do not turn, evenly single crochet all the way around the washcloth placing 2 sc in each corner and slip stitch into the very 1st sc.

Cut yarn and weave in ends.
