Reasons to Make Crochet Scrubbies

Scrubbies make for a great crochet project!  And here may be a few reasons why –

  • Easy to Make and Sell at Markets and Craft Fairs –  I know for me that at the few small markets that I have set up and sold crochet items at in the past, scrubbies were a great thing to have to sell as they serve a good purpose and are an inexpensive item to add to your booth.  They are super quick and easy, they are even something that you can sit and crochet at your market when it seems slow.
  • Reusable – Making your own little scrubbies is way more economical than using traditional scrubbers or a kitchen sponge because you can just throw them into the dishwasher to clean them and then reuse them for a long time instead of tossing them into the trash.
  • Uses Little Yarn – This is a great pattern for scrap yarn .  It takes such a small amount of yarn that usually leftover yarn from other projects is all you need to make them.
  • Saves Money – Aside from not using that much yarn, which alone makes them inexpensive to make, they will last for a really long time.
  • Yarn Variations – Different yarn brands have been expanding their scrubby yarn lines!  There are so many fun and colorful scrubby yarns on the market nowadays!  So we aren’t stuck with just having to use plain cotton yarn to make scrubbies with, we now have quite a few fun scrubby yarns.

Which Scrubby Yarn is the Best?

Which type of yarn is best for making scrubbies depends on what type of scrubby that you are wanting to crochet.  If you are wanting to crochet a face scrubbie pattern, then you would want to choose a soft cotton yarn.  I like worsted weight cotton yarn and a couple of my favorite brands are

If you aren wanting to crochet scrubbies for washing dishes, then you will want a yarn that has texture to it to help get the dishes clean.  A few good textured yarns that you can find are

I chose to use Yarn Bee Scrub-Ology ‘Scrub It’ Yarn for these flower scrubbies.  This brand of yarn comes in many different bright colors so it is the perfect yarn to use to make a bunch of different colored flower crochet scrubbies.

This yarn has a great texture and is not too rough, but scrubby enough to get dishes clean without scratching them.

Given the small amount of yarn that these fun scrubbies take to make, scrap yarn or leftover yarn from another project works great for this easy crochet project.

Can You Use Acrylic Yarn for Making Scrubbies?

No, you do not want to use acrylic yarn for any crochet scrubby pattern.  Acrylic yarn is not the best choice for making your own scrubbies as it does not absorb water and will not be very good at getting anything clean.

Any type of cotton yarn or yarn specifically made for crocheting scrubbies is going to be your best option for making scrubbies or dish scrubbers.

Any type of scrubby makes for a great housewarming gift.  You could put together a care package full of different cleaning related items and include some scrubbies.

  1. ok, these ae really cute and I wouldn’t mind having a handful of them in my kitchen. My question is: why do you put these on your site as a “free pattern” then also put them on etsy to sell.
I have a very limited income and lots of expenses (just alike everybody else) and when I see a cute pattern that I want to make, it upsets me (I’m 82 so I upset easily) to find that I have to jump thru hoops to get the pattern. I don’t know all the “tricks” to download, then have more to do to get the patterns…
    Just FYI

    1. Hi, the pattern IS available for free on my blog, you just have to scroll down towards the bottom of the page for it. I also sell the PDF in my Etsy shop for those that want a printable version. You don’t have to jump through hoops for the pattern, just scroll on down on the blog page and the entire pattern will be there.

  2. Thank you so much for this flower scrubber pattern! I love it❣️❣️ I have used this yarn for other scrubbers but now this is my favorite 💞
