60+ of the Best Free Crochet Shawl and Wrap Patterns

Two of my all time favorite things to crochet are blankets and shawls.  I’ve done a lot of blanket pattern round ups in the past and decided to do a round up filled with over 60 free shawl crochet patterns!

One thing that I love about an easy crochet shawl pattern is that you can take simple crochet stitches and different colors of yarn or even cake yarns to make a beautiful handmade shawl.

What Weight of Yarn is Best for a Crochet Shawl?

I think that this question really depends on the type of shawl that you are wanting.  The yarn weight that you choose to use for your shawl crochet pattern, will majorly effect the end result.  The lighter weight of the yarn, the more breathable and flowing of the shawl and the thicker the yarn, the heavier and warmer the shawl will be.

If you are wanting a lightweight shawl that is more for the summer and warmer weather than you will definitely want to use a DK weight yarn or something lighter in weight than that to give you the perfect light weight wrap that you are wanting.

And, if you are wanting a warmer shawl or more of a cold weather shawl, then I’d make sure to use a worsted weight yarn or thicker.

Which Shape of Shawl is Best?

This comes down to personal preference, whether you want a crochet triangle shawl or a rectangle shawl.  I personally love the shape of both.  Rectangle wraps make for a very elegant look, especially when made with a lighter weight yarn and triangle shawls can also double as a triangle scarf.

Crocheted shawls make for the perfect accessory for any time of them year.  A lighter weight shawl is nice on those cool summer nights and winter shawls are great for those super cold and snowy days.
