Whether you are going to a farmers market or just to the grocery store and want to have some reusable bags, this market bag crochet pattern will be perfect for both occasions. Scroll down for the Full FREE pattern!

This is the perfect bag to make to use to go on a Saturday morning in the Summer to your favorite Farmer’s Market. You can fill it full of all your favorite fruits and veggies while using a stylish and reusable market bag.

This free crochet bag pattern uses basic crochet stitches like single and half double crochet stitches. It has this semi open look for the majority of the body of the bag that is made from a 1 row repeat round.

Crocheting your own reusable shopping bags are a great way to help reduce the use of plastic bags.  Plus, you can make one in your favorite color, how fun is that!

What Yarn is Best for a Crochet Market Bag?

I’d definitely say that Cotton yarn is the best choice for crochet bags.

Cotton doesn’t stretch out as much as acrylic does and it also absorbs moisture so much better. So, if you are using this bag as a beach bag and it gets a little wet, it won’t be a problem with the cotton yarn.

I’d also use cotton if you are going to be going to a Farmer’s Market and putting a lot of veggies in the bag.

You can use acrylic, but if you are going to be putting heavier things into the bag, it will stretch more.

Cotton is super easy to clean and makes for great reusable bags. It’s also durable and holds up very well.

Here are some of my favorite worsted weight cotton yarns

How Much Yarn Do You Need to Crochet a Market Bag?

You will need approx. 400 yards of 100% Cotton yarn for this easy crochet market bag. I used Dishie Yarn and they are 190 yards each. I barely need any of the 3rd skein, just enough to finish a little bit of the very last row.

Depending on the pattern, I’d at least have a minimum of 400 yards on hand before you start the project, but to be safe I’d say have 500 yards on hand. I don’t like playing yarn chicken and would rather be safe than sorry and have extra yarn left over. You can always use it for other crochet projects.
