Along with blankets, shawls are one of my favorite things to crochet and this easy crochet shawl pattern is no exception! This beautiful shawl uses basic crochet stitches so it is perfect for even a beginner crocheter.
I love using a striped or variegated yarn for this easy crochet pattern. This shawl is so pretty when worked up with a yarn with many different colors in it but I think that this shawl would also look pretty if made with a solid color yarn.
I have actually had this yarn sitting on my yarn shelf for quite a bit but could never decided what I wanted to make with it. Once I started working up this shawl pattern with it, I knew it was the perfect yarn for this simple pattern!
If you have followed me for very long, then you may remember this shawl as my Denim Shawl Pattern. For that original pattern, I used Mandala ombre yarn from Lion Brand and it worked up beautifully! I have actually made a couple of these shawls in different colors of the Mandala yarn and they each turned out beautifully.
This shawl is made with a fun stitch called the ‘Moss Stitch’. This stitch is also known as the ‘Linen Stitch’ but both stitches are worked the exact same way.
For this particular triangle crochet shawl, I decided to use I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby. I used the color Kaleidoscope and the colors in this yarn are absolutely gorgeous! I love how this yarn worked up with this particular shawl design.
I used 5 skeins in total of the I Love This Yarn for this great pattern. That comes out to approx. 1,250 yards of worsted weight yarn for this pattern.
Can you use different weights of yarn for this simple shawl?
Yes, this pattern would work up great in different yarn weights, especially when worked up in lighter weight yarns like a DK weight yarn. Now, the type of yarn or weight of yarn that you use will affect the final outcome of the shawl.
If you are wanting to use a thicker yarn like a bulky yarn, I’m not sure how this pattern would look or feel. I have a feeling that it might make the shawl too bulky or stiff. If you want a flowing shawl, then you will want to use a lighter weight yarn. The thinner the yarn that you use, the more flowing of a shawl you will have.
If you want a really lightweight shawl then you might even consider using a fingering weight yarn for this easy pattern.
This easy crochet triangle shawl pattern is such an easy project to make. It uses simple stitches like the chain stitch and single crochet stitch throughout the pattern. And, another great thing about this specific pattern, it is a free pattern!
I hope you will enjoy this Easy Shawl Pattern and will make it your next crochet project!

- 5 Skeins of I Love This yarn in Kaleidoscope or approx. 1,250 yards of similar worsted weight yarn.
- J / 6.00 mm Crochet Hook
- Yarn Needle / Tapestry Needle
- Scissors
- Tape Measure
- 6” tall piece of cardboard (for the fringe)
- Small sized crochet hook (for the fringe, I used a 4mm)
Finished Measurements:
- Finished shawl is approx. 63” across x 33” long (without the fringe) The fringe will add 6” in length.
Stitch Key:
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- tr = treble crochet
- ch = chain
- t = turn
- sk = skip
- sp = space
- sl st = slip stitch

Gauge:
- 8 st x 14 r = 4” in moss stitch
- I only counted the sc as stitches
- Gauge isn’t super important as a shawl can differ slightly in size and still fit.
Notes:
- To make the fringe you can use a piece of cardboard that is 6” tall
- You can make the fringe as long as you would like. I made my fringe 6” long.
- I will include other notes throughout the pattern when needed.
Pattern:
With J Hook-
Row 1: ch 2, in 1st ch (sc, ch 1, sc, ch 2, sc, ch 1, sc) You Should have 4 st (I only count the single crochets as stitches)
Row 2: ch 1, t, sc in 1st sc, ch 1, sc in ch-1 sp, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc in ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in last st (6)
Row 3: ch 1, t, sc in 1st sc, ch 1, * sc in ch-1 sp, ch 1* repeat * to * until you reach ch-2 sp, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp, ch 1, *sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1* repeat * to * until you reach the last st, sc in last st (8)
Row 4 – 90: repeat row 3
Or use as many skeins of yarn as you would like to make a larger shawl.
Cut yarn and weave in ends.
You should have about 1/2 of a skein of yarn left for the fringe
You could easily not add the fringe and leave the shawl as is.
To Make Fringe:
Wrap the yarn around the piece of cardboard and cut it across one end to make the pieces of fringe.
Add the fringe to the shawl:
I add 1 piece of fringe to every single crochet & chain 1 space.
Take a piece of fringe and fold it in half. Then take your small sized crochet hook and insert it into the space where you want to add the fringe. Put the piece of yarn on the hook and pull it through the space a little. Grab the 2 ends of the piece of fringe and pull them through the loop. Pull tight to secure.
Repeat around the shawl.
