This has to be one of the easiest crochet hat patterns that there is!  If you can crochet a rectangle, then you can make this easy crochet hat pattern.

It has a simple ribbed design to it although it’s not your traditional back loop single crochet ribbing.  I chose to use half double crochet in the back loop to create this ribbed design because it works up quicker than using single crochet.

To make this hat, you do need to know the difference between the front loop of a stitch and the back loop of a stitch.  If you need help understanding the difference between the front and back loop of your crochet stitches, then check out THIS POST!

The Yarn

The type of yarn that I chose to use is Lion Brand’s Color Theory Yarn for this free crochet pattern.  I used the color Stonewash and Canyon.  This is a very soft yarn that works up beautifully.

I used 2 strands held together since this is a worsted weight yarn that is a bit on the thinner side to me of a #4 yarn to help give this beanie more of a chunky look and feel without using chunky yarn.

This pattern uses some basic crochet stitches like chain stitches and half double crochet stitches.  To make this hat pattern, all you have to now how to do is crochet a simple rectangle, it is an easy hat pattern!

I chose to top my hat with a faux fur pom pom, but you do not have to to that if you don’t want to.  I think it really adds a nice finish to the hat.

If you are wondering where to get pom poms, I order mine from Amazon!  They have lots of different ones and colors.  The ones that I get have little elastic loops so they are super easy to secure to your hat.

This easy crochet beanie pattern is made from a basic rectangle.  This is just about the easiest way to make a hat especially for a beginner because there is no increasing or decreasing involved making is a great project for a new crocheter.

The stitch pattern for this beanie is very simple as it is the same stitch and a 1 row repeat after the foundation row!  It’s made from basic stitches like chains, slip stitches and half double crochets.

Always make a gauge swatch when crocheting things that need to fit properly like hats.  If you don’t make a gauge swatch, your hat may not fit correctly because you may need to change your hook size to match my gauge.  I used a J / 6.00 mm hook for this free pattern, but you may need to use a larger or smaller hook depending on your tension.

  1. Hi Kylee
I so enjoy getting all your crochet patterns! So creative and so much fun, especially for this beginner!
I love this bennie hat and I was wondering if it would make up just as good with a single strain of a thicker yarn? Thank you!
