Do you love the idea of granny squares but maybe don’t want all the ‘holes’ that come with the traditional granny square? Then you need to crochet Solid Granny Squares! They give you the same concept of granny squares but with fewer holes!

There are a lot of different granny square designs like your classic granny square, sunflower granny squares, starburst granny squares and of course, solid granny squares. It’s no wonder that all designs of granny squares are so popular given all the fun combinations that you can create with different colors of yarn!
I love using different colors of scrap yarn that I might have laying around and use that to make different kinds of colorful granny squares or even hexagons for scrap blankets. And, scrap yarn or any leftover yarn you may have is perfect to use for these solid granny squares too!

These solid squares are made using simple stitches like chain stitches and double crochet stitches so they are super easy to crochet! I think that even new crocheters will have no trouble learning to make this solid square crochet pattern.
How to Join Solid Granny Squares?
Once you have crocheted a stack of these beautiful granny squares, you will probably want to start joining them together to make a blanket or something. There are many methods of joining granny squares but a couple of my favorite ways are the Invisible Join method and the Slip Stitch method.
If you are wondering exactly what yarn works best for crochet granny squares, the answer is most yarns will work great! Cotton, acrylic, wool and any yarn weight like dk weight, light weight, worsted weight and even chunky yarn will all work great for making the perfect solid granny square. Just make sure to use the correct hook size recommended on the yarn label.
Just keep in mind that using different fibers and weights of yarn will produce different sizes of squares so make sure to stick with the same yarn and hook for larger projects so all the squares will be a uniform size for your crochet project.
