I don’t know about you, but all I’ve been seeing in the crochet world right now is Granny Squares! You either love them or hate them and I, myself, am kinda growing to like them!

There are so many different options when it comes to making Granny Squares! You can change the color every row, every couple of rows, make solid squares, Rainbow Squares, Pastel Squares….The options are endless!

You can also make so many different things with Granny Squares! Blankets, Bags, Vests, Dresses, Headbands, the list just goes on. This is a very versatile stitch to learn!

I was thinking that I actually haven’t made a tutorial that shows you how to make a traditional granny square. I’ve made tutorials for Circle Granny Squares, Flower Granny Squares, Solid Granny Squares, Heart Granny Squares and even the Granny Stripe Stitch, but not just the basic, traditional granny square. So, I thought it was about time to change that!

2 Ways to Start –

I will mention that there are 2 options when it comes to starting your granny square.

  1. The Magic Circle Method
  2. The Chain Stitch Method
2 beginning rounds of a granny square used to show the difference between the chain stitch method and magic circle method
Teal Square used the chain method and the grey square used the Magic Circle

I prefer to do the magic circle method because it’s easier for me to get all my stitches into the magic circle then pull it closed as opposed to trying to stuff all your stitches into the very 1st beginning chain. But everyone has their preferences, so I will be showing you how to start them both ways.

The main thing to remember if you choose to do the Magic Circle Method is that you need to knot the beginning tail before you weave it in! Many people forget or don’t do this step and all their hard work winds up coming unraveled, which is no fun at all.

If you do not know how to make a magic circle, I have a Youtube video for that HERE!
