Want to learn a new crochet stitch that has a nice texture? Then you will want to give the griddle stitch a try.
It’s a simple stitch pattern to learn that involves your some of your basic crochet stitches like chain stitches, single crochet and double crochet stitches.
For those wondering what yarn I’m using, it’s ‘I Love This Yarn’ in Shocking Violet!
This crochet stitch pattern looks pretty whether worked up in a solid color or a multi color yarn. And, it even looks good if you work it up in stripes too!
I could see working up a baby blanket in this great stitch pattern.
Griddle Stitch vs Lemon Peel Stitch
You may be wondering, is the griddle stitch the same as the lemon peel stitch? The answer would be, yes, the griddle stitch is the exact same stitch as the lemon peel stitch. Both stitches are worked just alike, they are just called by 2 different names kinda like the linen stitch and the moss stitch.
It’s made by alternating 2 basic stitches, sc stitches and dc stitches, and it creates a beautiful texture from a simple repeat. It’s a super easy stitch to do as it is a one-row repeat making it a great stitch to learn for even a beginner crocheter.

Skill Level: Easy
Things you will need:
- Any yarn with corresponding hook will work (I’m using a #4 worsted weight yarn & a H / 5.00mm Crochet Hook)
- Scissors
- Yarn Needle / tapestry needle
- Stitch Markers (optional)
Abbreviation / Stitch Key:
- ch = chain
- st = stitch (es)
- sk = skip
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- sp = space
- yo = yarn over
- sl st = slip stitch
- t = turn
Notes:
- Your foundation chain starting out can be any odd number of stitches that you want depending on how big of a piece you are wanting to make.
Griddle Stitch Pattern
Step 1: Start by chaining an odd number of stitches. You can start with any odd number of chains, since I’m making a washcloth, I’ll be starting with 29 stitches.
First row
Step 2: In the second chain from your hook work a sc
Step 3: dc in the next ch stitch *sc, dc* repeat * to * across. You should finish with a dc in the last st. You should have an even number of stitches across.
For row 2 and every repeat row
ch 1, turn your work, single crochet in the first stitch (make sure that it is the dc from the previous row and not the turning chain), dc in the next stitch. * sc, dc * repeat all the way across.
Work the rest of the rows by simply repeating row 2.
For the griddle stitch you are basically working a single crochet stitch into every double crochet of the previous row and a double crochet into every single crochet from the previous row. After the chain stitch at the beginning of each row, you will always start with a single crochet in the first stitch and end with a double crochet at the end of the row in the last stitch.
And that is how easy it is to crochet the griddle Stitch!
