Granny squares are so popular and you see them popping up everywhere, but do you know what’s cuter than just a regular old granny square?  Sunflower granny squares!  And you know what you can turn a bunch of sunflower granny squares into?  A crochet sunflower bag!

How cute is this bag?!  The best thing about this bag is how bright and cheery it is!

For this bag pattern, I chose to use a cotton yarn.  Cotton yarn hold up so much better and doesn’t stretch out like acrylic yarn does.  I chose to use Lion Brand’s 24/7 cotton yarn and this sunflower square bag turned out beautifully!

I did use a small size of hook for this bag than I normally would use for this yarn because I wanted to make sure the stitches were a bit tighter than normal.  I ended up using a 4.50 mm hook for this bag.

I always feel like my crocheted bags look better and hold their shape better when made with cotton yarn.

For those wondering if this is a beginner friendly pattern or not, I’d definitely say that this is more on the intermediate side of crochet.  This pattern does consist of some basic crochet stitches like single crochet and double crochet stitches but it also involves some harder stitches like puff stitches, cluster stitches and you also need to know how to join granny squares.

You can find a full tutorial for making the crochet sunflower square IN THIS POST along with a video tutorial, but the written instructions are on down below.

How to Join Granny Squares

When it comes to joining granny squares there are many different ways to do this like the slip stitch method or the invisible join method.  I chose to use the slip stitch method of joining my squares and I love the look that it gave to the seams along the edges of the squares.

You can find a tutorial for the slip stitch join method HERE!

And, you don’t have to make this bag with just sunflower granny squares.  You could make this bag with different granny square variations with different styles or colors of granny squares.

Cut yarn and weave in all ends.

You will need to arrange the squares out like the image below and join them.  I used the slip stitch method to join them and you can find a tutorial for that method HERE!

Join the squares this way for the front side

The squares that have the lines through them are squares that you will fold in half and attach to the back side.

Here is how you should join your back side squares.

After you have joined your squares fold the squares in half from the front side that have lines through them and join them to the back side piece.

Cut yarn and weave in all ends.

Strap

With white yarn

Row 1: ch 10, sc in each st across (9)

Row 2: ch 1, t, sc in the blo of each stitch across (9)

Row 3: ch 1, t, thermal sc across (9)

Repeat row 3 until strap is approx. 18” long without being stretched.

*NOTE* you can make the strap with just rows of regular sc, but the thermal stitch won’t stretch as much.

Leave a long tail on your strap and sew (I did the whipstitch) it onto the very top corners of your bag being careful not to twist it.  Weave in all ends.
