This Mountain Ridge Cardigan is my very 1st cardigan pattern that I have ever designed and I must say that I’m totally in love with it!
If there is one thing that I can say about this cardigan, it would be that it has lots of TEXTURE! The special stitch I used for this cardigan gives it a wonderful texture that just makes this cardigan what it is!
The stitch I used is called the Alpine Stitch. If you don’t know how to do this stitch or maybe need a little refresher on it, I’d highly recommend checking out my tutorial for it before you start this cardigan. You can find the written, video and picture tutorial for the Alpine Stitch HERE
Whenever I take pictures outside, I always have a little furry photo bomber. Whether it’s one of my cats or dogs, in this case is was Penny!
I tried to get her to pose for a picture, but she doesn’t like taking pictures very well, so this one will have to do. She usually refuses to look directly at the camera. She will look every direction and way except at the camera. I think she’s really smart and does it purposefully, just to be stubborn, LOL.
About the Design –
This Cardigan is made in 5 pieces – the back panel, 2 front panels and 2 sleeves that are seamed together to create this beautiful cardigan. I have included lots of pictures throughout the pattern to help give you a visual aspect of how it all goes together.
I would say that this design is more on the intermediate level. It would probably be helpful if you already have a little knowledge about crocheting a garment before you make this one.
I will say that this stitch is a bit of a yarn eater, but this cardigan is soooooooo worth it! The detail and texture that it gives it just absolutely stunning!

Front Left Panel Complete. Cut yarn
Right Front Panel –
Row 1 – 60 (60, 60, 64, 64, 64, 64, 68, 68): same as the left panel.
Row 61 (61, 61, 65, 65, 65, 65, 69, 69): ch 1, t, sc until you reach the last 4 st, sc2tog twice 19 (23, 25, 29, 31, 35, 37, 41, 43)
Row 62 (62, 62, 66, 66, 66, 66, 70, 70) – 77 (77, 77, 85, 85, 85, 85, 93, 93): same as the left panel.
Right panel complete. Cut yarn.
You can go ahead and seam the front panels onto the back panel now or wait until after you have made the sleeves.
To seam the front panels to the back, I laid the back panel flat with the right side facing up and laid the 2 front panels on the back panel with their wrong side facing up.
I seamed the shoulders first. Then, I seamed down the sides. You can start seaming right under the decrease for the arms on each side.
Cut yarn and you can go ahead and weave in those ends or wait until the end after you attach the sleeves.
*Note – when seaming, make sure to go through both loops on each stitch and not just the very ones on the edge or it will leave a gap down the seam (see pic above)
Sleeves – Make 2

You will now do the ribbing for the cuff of the sleeve
Ribbing –
Row 1: ch 13 (13, 13, 17, 17, 17, 17, 19, 19), sc in 2nd st from hook and in each ch st down, sl st into 2 st on the sleeve
Row 2: turn piece, sk the 2 sl stitches and blsc in each st across
Row 3: ch 1, t, blsc in each st down, sl st into 2 st on sleeve
Repeat rows 2 & 3 until you have worked all the way across the cuff of your sleeve.
On the very last row, you will only have 1 st to sl st into.
To seam the Sleeves –
take the sleeve and fold it longways with the wrong side facing outward
I started seaming the base of the sleeve and worked my way to the cuff. Seam all the way across and cut yarn
Repeat for other sleeve
To Seam the sleeves to the cardigan –
Line up your sleeve and cardigan, making sure that both pieces are inside out and stitch all the way around
Repeat for other sleeve
Last step (besides for weaving in ends) is to crochet the ribbing around the inside edging.
Edging –
Attach your yarn on the bottom right side of your cardigan
Row 1: evenly sc up the side, around the collar and down the other side. How many stitches you end with isn’t important, just make sure to space them out evenly enough and not too close together so you edges don’t fan out or curl up.
*note – what I done is I would sc up one side and try the cardigan on to make sure the edge laid flat so I’d know if I had too many / not enough stitches on the edge.
Row 2: ch 2, t, dc in every st around.
Row 3: ch 2, t, * dc, fpdc * repeat * to * around. If you have an even number of stitches you will end on a fpdc and if you have an odd number of st you will end on a dc. Either is fine, just make sure to place a stitch in the very last st.
Row 4: ch 2, t, place a dc in every dc st and place a bpdc in every fpdc around.
This will create the ribbed look
Sizes XS (S, M) are complete
For Sizes L (XL, 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X) only
Row 5: ch 2, t, place a dc in every dc st and place a fpdc around every bpdc st around.
Row 6: ch 2, t, place a dc in every dc st and place a bpdc in every fpdc around.
Sizes L (XL, 2X, 3X) are complete
For sizes 4X & 5X only
Repeat rows 5 & 6 once more.
Cut yarn and weave in all ends.
I hope that you have found this tutorial helpful! I love to see what everyone makes using inspiration from my blog! So, whether you make this Mountain Ridge Cardigan or another one of my patterns, Be sure to tag me @okiegirlblingnthings on Instagram so I can see!
I would love to make this cardigan. Can I make it sorter?
Thank you
Hi, yes, you could make it shorter, just make sure that you decrease the back panels and the front panels by the same amount of rows!
This is super cute! Congrats on your first cardigan pattern. I love anything made with the alpine stitch. It just catches my eye anytime I see it. This is definitely going on my short list to make.
I have a question….I am trying to do this sweater and I am not really good with patterns but getting this one. I was on Left Front Panel- the directions went from row 6 with 31 stitches (for the Large) and row 7 says 64 stitches. Now I am lost. What do I do?
Please help,
Thanks, Pat
Hi, the 64 doesn’t mean stitches, it means work rows 7 – 64 repeating rows 3-6. It’s not a stitch count but a row count. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions!
Hi, thank you for a beautiful pattern. But I can’t seem to find the tutorial. If you can tell me where I can find it would be great.
Hi, the written pattern is in the post. If you are wanting a video tutorial, I don’t have one for this pattern. ☺️
I paid for this pattern and I’m not getting a pdf or anything saying I’m getting the pattern. I’m disappointed
Thanks
Can you send me a message through Etsy and I can check on it!
