When I made this blanket, I wanted a blanket that was made with granny squares and that also incorporated fall colors (all while trying to use up some yarn already in my stash). And I came up with this Autumn Sunburst Granny Square Blanket and I absolutely love how it turned out!

I had some Vanna’s Choice yarn on hand and it worked perfectly for this blanket pattern. But any #4 worsted weight yarn will work for this free blanket pattern.

I was wanting a blanket that I could hang over my couch for the fall season so this blanket is more of a small throw sized blanket but you could easily make it larger if you wanted to. I think it goes beautifully in my yarn room!

For this crochet blanket pattern, I used the sunburst granny square pattern which is also known as a starburst granny square and made a total of 42 squares. You could easily make and add more squares to make a larger blanket.

And for the join method on this blanket, I choose to use the invisible join method. You can use what ever method you prefer but I really like this method of joining squares.

Do I have to block my squares before joining?

No, you don’t have to block your squares before joining but I do recommend it. It makes them lay flat and line up better when you go to join them.

I used the wet blocking method but you can use whatever blocking method that you like.

Round 1: Make a MC and ch 3 (counts as the 1st dc), work 15 dc into mc, sl st into first dc (top of ch 3.) You should have 16 stitches total

Round 2: ch 2 (does not count as a stitch), work a puff stitch into every st around, sl stitch into top of the first puff stitch. You should have 16 puff stitches total

I make a slip knot and attach the new yarn color into any chain 1 space.

Round 3: ch 2 (does not count as a stitch), * work a cluster st into next chain space (between puff stitches), ch 1* repeat * to * around, sl st to top of 1st cluster stitch. You should have 16 cluster stitches.

I make a slip knot and attach it into any chain 1 space. Work all stitches in the ch-1 spaces between clusters

Round 4: ch 4 (counts as a tr stitch), ( 2 tr, ch 3, 3 tr) in same ch 1 space, * 3 dc, 3 hdc, 3 dc, ( 3 tr, ch 3, 3 tr) in next space (ch-1 space) * repeat * to * 2 more times, 3 dc, 3 hdc, 3 dc, sl st into the top of the beginning ch 4

Weave in all ends.

You can now go ahead and block all your squares.

This part can be optional but I did decide to do it. It will help your squares to lay flat and look neater when joined.

I used the wet block method.

Joining the Hexagons –

You can now lay out your squares so you can start join them. This is how I arranged mine

I used the Invisible join method to join my squares. You can find a video tutorial for it HERE!

Continue repeating from first { until you reach the beginning and sl st into top of 1st ch 3
