Calling all unicorn lovers! Who needs a free unicorn crochet pattern?

Purple crocheted amigurumi unicorn in front of a wall of yarn.

This little unicorn is such a fun project! One thing that I love about this great pattern is that the head and body are crocheted in one piece! That’s a win-win in my book. And, the best thing? It’s a FREE pattern!

The color options that you could make this crochet unicorn amigurumi in are absolutely endless. You could use a white yarn for the body and all different colors for the curly mane. I think that it would be fun do to rainbow colors for the mane! I chose a purple toned yarn for this unicorn and I absolutely love how it turned out!

This would definitely make for the perfect gift for a little girl that loves unicorns.

Yarn I used

I used Brava Speckle and Brava yarn for the unicorn. One thing that I love about this brand of yarn is that they have many different coordinating color options in this line of yarn.

I choose the purple Brava yarn (it’s actually the color called Freesia) and absolutely love it paired with the Plummy Speckle Brava yarn. It makes for the perfect, magical unicorn!

They are both a #4 / worsted weight yarn that is 100% acrylic. We Crochet has 8 different speckle yarns that have a coordinating solid color in their Brava Line. Which color combination will you try?

Is Crocheting Amigurumi Hard?

Crocheting amigurumi is definitely an art and a skill that takes practice to learn. The biggest issue can come when you are trying to sew on all the separate pieces.

I highly recommend making all the pieces first and getting some straight pins and lining up all the individual pieces and pinning them to the body before you actually sew them on.

This way if you want to slightly move something over you will be able to. And, you see what everything looks like before you attach it.

Other than that, Amigurumi typically consists of basic crochet stitches like single crochet. Really, amigurumi is made up of mostly single crochet stitches and decreasing in single crochet.

So, if you know how to single crochet, single crochet 2 stitches together and make a magic ring / circle, you are all set!

Amigurumi is a skill like anything else, the more you do it and practice, the better you will be at it.

What Supplies do I need to make a Unicorn?

To make this cute crochet unicorn pattern, you will need a worsted weight yarn, a 3.5 mm crochet hook, Poly-Fil, 12mm Safety eyes, yarn needle or tapestry needle and scissors.

Straight pins are optional depending on whether you want to line all the piece up before stitching them to the body.

I use Clover Amour Crochet hooks a lot. I absolutely love them, especially when making amigurumi.

I like buying my safety eyes off of Amazon. I buy a big pack of them and they last forever!

Assembly –

*Note on the ears – I fold the bottom sides together and sew just across the bottom to make them look more like unicorn ears

Showing you how I fold the bottom half of the ear in half to make it look more like a unicorn ear

Sometimes it is easier for me to use the straight pins and pin all the pieces to the head before I sew them on, to make sure they are lined up correctly.

Showing all the pieces pinned to the body before sewing them on

Although, I have just sewn them own with out pinning them on first.

Lightly stuff the nose with poly fil. Using the eyes as guide, stitch the nose on, adding more stuffing as you go.

Now, line the ears up and sew them to the head.

Next, stuff and sew on the horn. I like to go ahead and finish the head by attaching all the curls to the top of the head.

Weave in any ends if there are any left.
