If you have been hit by super cold weather, this is the perfect free pattern to make to help keep you warm.

This hat pattern is super easy and a quick project to work up.  It uses basic stitches like double crochet stitches and single crochet stitches.  And, since it uses chunky yarn, the whole hat is only 14 rounds from start to finish!

About This Chunky Hat Pattern

This pattern is for an adult size hat that will fit an approx. 21” – 23” head.  It’s a great project if you are wanting something that will work for both men and women as I think this hat will work for both depending on the yarn colors that you choose.

Whether you are a new crocheter or a more experienced crocheter, I think that you will enjoy this chunky crochet beanie pattern.

I used a yarn from Hobby Lobby called ‘I Love This Chunky’.  It is a #5 Bulky weight yarn that comes with 109 yards per skein.  It takes almost a full skein to make 1 hat with a small amount left over.  I always love 1 skien patterns!

Since this hat is worked from the top down, you don’t have to worry about knowing how to decrease and doing decrease rows.

To Pom or Not to Pom?

This hat looks great without a pom pom, but I also think that it would look good topped with a pom.

I made another beanie a couple years ago, find it IN THIS POST, and I used I Love This Chunky yarn and topped it with with a grey faux fur pom pom and I really liked the look of it topped with a pom.

Yarn Substitutions

Any #5 bulky weight yarn can be substituted in place of the I Love This Chunky Yarn.

These are a few yarns that would work for this free hat pattern

No matter what yarn you choose to use for this hat pattern, just make sure that you obtain the correct gauge before you start making your hat or it may not fit properly even if you use the exact same hook size as I do.  Change and go to a larger hook or smaller hook if you need to, to be able to get the correct gauge swatch needed.

  • Finished beanie is approx. 9” across the brim when laid flat and 8” tall.

Stitch Key:

  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet stitch
  • tr = treble crochet
  • blsc = back loop single crochet
  • mc = magic circle / magic ring
  • ch = chain
  • t = turn
  • sk = skip
  • sp = space
  • sl st = slip stitch (es)
  • st = stitch (es)

Gauge:

  • 11 st x 6 r = 4” in double crochet

Notes:

  • This hat is made to fit the average adult head size of 21” – 23” in head circumference.
  • Stitch count is given at the end of each round in between the ( ) symbols.
  • This beanie is worked from the top down.
  • I will include other notes throughout the pattern when needed.

Pattern:

Round 1: 12 dc in mc, sl st into 1st st of round to join (12)

Round 2: ch 2 (does NOT count as st here and throughout), work 2 dc in each st around, sl st into 1st st of round to join (24)

Round 3: ch 2, *dc in 1 st, 2 dc* repeat * to * around, sl st into 1st st of round to join (36)

Round 4: ch 2, *dc in 2 st, 2 dc* repeat * to * around, sl st into 1st st of round to join (48)

Round 5 – 10: ch 2, dc in each st around, sl st into 1st st of round to join (48)

Round 11 – 14: ch 1, blsc in each st around, sl st into 1st st of round to join (48)

Cut yarn and weave in ends.  Make sure that you know the magic circle that you started with on the top of your hat.  It’s a good idea to knot the magic circle before you weave it in, it can come loose and your stitches can start unraveling.  I have a video showing exactly how I knot my magic circle tails, find it ON YOUTUBE!

Feel free to add a pom pom to the top of the beanie if you want to!  I think this hat looks good both with a pom pom and without a pom pom.
