What Yarn is Best for Making Coasters?
A 100% cotton yarn is the best yarn to use when making your own coasters! It’s super absorbent and holds it shape very well even after a lot of use.
You may ask if you can use acrylic yarn for coasters and while you definitely can, it won’t act like a coaster and absorb liquid or sweat from your drink as acrylic is not absorbent. For best results, I highly recommend using cotton yarn for coasters!
I chose to use Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton yarn for these festive coasters! This is a 100% cotton, worsted weight yarn. Some other great cotton yarns that you could use would be
- Dishie from We Crochet
- I Love This Cotton from Hobby Lobby
- Crafter’s Secret from Hobby Lobby
- Lily Sugar n Cream
These cute coasters will add the perfect splash of Holiday Colors to your home. They make for such cute decor for your coffee table or even on your end tables.
The best thing is that you can get a bunch of these coasters from just one skein of yarn. This also makes them a great way to use up some of that scrap yarn that you have laying around.
This easy crochet Christmas coaster pattern uses a fun border stitch called the candy cane border. It may look like a difficult stitch to do, but once you understand how it works, it is actually a fairly easy stitch to do.
I have the written instructions for this border below or you can watch the video tutorial for this candy cane border stitch.

Round Coasters
With white yarn
Round 1: 12 dc in mc, sl st into 1st st (12)
Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, sl st into 1st st (24)
Round 3: ch 2, * 2 dc, dc * repeat * to * around, sl st into 1st st (36)
Cut yarn and weave in ends. Move on to the border section of the pattern
Square Coasters
With white yarn
Row 1: ch 14, dc in 3rd ch st from hook and in each st across (12)
Row 2 – 6: ch 2, t, dc in each st across (12)
ch 1, evenly sc around the edges placing 2 sc in each corner st, sl st into 1st sc when you get back to the beginning.
Cut yarn and weave in ends. Move on to the border section of the pattern
Border for both
Beginning anywhere around the edge of your coaster, attach your red yarn and chain 4, in the next st to the left of the red yarn, attach the green and chain 4
Insert your hook back into the red yarn and cross it over in front of the green and sc into the next st
ch 4
Remove hook from red and insert into green. Cross it over in front of the red and sc into the next st, ch 4
Keep continuing in like manner, alternating between the red and green yarn. When you reach the point where you started, depending on how many stitches you have around your border, you may have to skip a stitch in order to keep the color pattern even. You can see here that I have one stitch left, but I’m going to skip it because I don’t want 2 red strands next to each other.
Had green been the next color, I would have worked the stitch. Now we are going to sl st the red into the bottom beginning of the red and the green into the bottom beginning of the green
