If you are wanting a warm scarf pattern that has a lot of texture and will be warm in cold weather, then this is the perfect pattern for you! I used a fun stitch called the Alpine stitch for this scarf and it turned out beautiful.
A crochet scarf is the perfect accessory for your winter wardrobe. And it would be so pretty to make a matching beanie with the same yarn!
I would say that this scarf pattern is more on the intermediate level of crochet due to the fact that it uses the alpine stitch. While this stitch uses some basic crochet stitches like the single crochet stitch and double crochet stitches, it also uses a stitch called front post double crochet. If you have never crocheted this stitch before then I would highly recommend watching the full video tutorial IN THIS POST!
For this specific scarf I used a worsted weight yarn that is actually a cake yarn. It’s Yarn Bee Sugarwheel yarn in the color ‘Color by Numbers’ that comes from Hobby Lobby. I used a total of 3 skeins of yarn for this pattern.
You could swap out this yarn for a different yarn weight like a bulky weight yarn but I think the stitch will lose its defined look by doing so. I think it would be best to stick with a worsted weight yarn for this so the stitches look more defined and clean.
For the foundation chain on this scarf, I like to do the foundation single crochet. It’s easier than chaining stitches and then working back down into those little chain spots.
This is a beautiful scarf to work up for a gift for someone. Handmade things like crochet scarves make for great gifts for a variety of people. And this is the perfect project to work on for someone special in your life.

- To change the width of the scarf, you can start with a chain of any odd number of stitches. OR if you want to start with a row of foundation single crochet, you will need to do an even number of stitches.
- I will include other notes throughout the pattern when needed.
Pattern –
Row 1: fsc 32 OR ch 33, sc in 2nd ch st from hook and in each ch st across (32)
Row 2: ch 2, t, dc in each st across (32)
Row 3: ch 1, t, sc in each st (32)
Row 4: ch 2, t, dc in 1st st, * fpdc, dc* repeat * to * around (32)
Row 5: ch 1, t, sc in each st (32)
Row 6: ch 2, t, fpdc around 1st st, * dc, fpdc* repeat * to * around (32)
Row 7: ch 1, t, sc in each st (32)
Repeat rows 4 – 7 as many times as needed until your scarf is the desired length, I quit when I had a little less than half of the last skein of yarn left.
Cut yarn and weave in ends.
*NOTE – this stitch will try to curl on the edges some, so I did have to block each end to make them lay flat.
Once the ends have been blocked, you can add fringe if you want.
To add fringe (optional)
wrap yarn multiple times around piece of cardboard and cut along one end. Take your piece of yarn and fold it in half, use your crochet hook to pull the loop through a stitch on the edge of your scarf and pull the 2 loose ends through the loop
repeat across both edges of scarf
I do have a video tutorial for adding fringe HERE
