Nothing makes me think of summer more than watermelon!!! And what can be cuter than a watermelon bag? This watermelon bag crochet pattern is such a fun project!
What Yarn is Best for a Crochet Bag?
My top 2 yarns for crochet bags are going to be either a worsted weight acrylic yarn or a worsted weight cotton yarn. Both of these yarns work great for any crochet bag pattern.
I chose to use Brava Worsted yarn from We Crochet for this watermelon bag. It is a 100% acrylic and worsted weight yarn that holds up very well.
The 4 colors that you will need are red, grass, white and black.
I used a special stitch for the strap. I wanted a stitch that would hold up well, be durable and not stretch too much. The Thermal Stitch is the perfect stitch for that.
I also have a full video and picture tutorial of the thermal stitch if you want a more in depth tutorial for that. You can CHECK OUT THIS POST for more.
And for the front piece of the bag, I used a fun stitch called the Bobble Stitch to help give this bag some dimension and texture. I think that it really turned out good.
I also have a full video and picture tutorial of the bobble stitch if you want a more in depth tutorial for that. You can CHECK OUT THIS POST for more.

- The bag is made in 3 pieces, the front piece, back piece and the strap
- The front piece of the bag will be turned on SOME rows, but not all, so pay close attention to which rows say to turn (t) The reason for this is because bobbles have to be worked on a wrong side row.
- You always work a bobble stitch on a wrong side row
- The back piece is made without turning at all and by working with the right side facing you at all times

Back piece is complete but do NOT cut yarn
Lay the front piece on top of the back piece, making sure the wrong sides are facing each other and slip stitch around the edges.
Sl st 110 stitches, leaving 30 st open. You can leave more or less depending on how wide you want the opening of your bag to be.
*OPTION*
You can also stuff with polyfil at this point and make a pillow instead of a bag and finish sl st the top together
Strap –
With grass,
Row 1: ch 7, sc in each st across (6)
Row 2: ch 1, t, sc in the blo of each stitch across (6)
Row 3-140: ch 1, t, thermal sc across (6)
*NOTE* you can make the strap with just rows of regular sc, but the thermal stitch won’t stretch as much.
You can also make the strap to whatever length you desire.
Cut yarn leaving a long tail, Sew 1 end of the strap to 1 side of the bag and the other end to the other side, being careful not to twist the strap.
Cut yarn and weave in ends.
