Who wore the Elf hat better??? George (cat) or Penny (dog)? Believe it or not, George was a better sport at getting his picture took than Penny, even though his eyes say different.

This would make such a cute photo prop for Christmas pictures if you are wanting to include your fur babies!

A couple years ago, I made my other cats and Penny a Turkey Hat (which you can find HERE) and I thought it was time for a Christmas themed one!

I used I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby, but any worsted weight yarn will work.

Things you will need:

  • I Love This Yarn in Red, White & Jelly Bean
  • 2” Boye Pom Pom Maker (optional)
  • H- 5.00mm Crochet Hook
  • Yarn Needle

Notes:

  • My hat measures approx. 11’’ in circumference and fits my cat approx. 10 lbs and dog approx. 14lbs
  • Depending on your size of dog/cat you could probably go up or down a hook size to adjust it to fit.
  • On round 1 for the hat, you can easily ch 37 and hdc in the second ch from hook and in each ch st around instead of the fhdc but the fhdc will stretch more.

Gauge – 12 st x 8 r = 4” in half double crochet

Sizing –

Will fit a Cat – Small dog with head circumference of 10” – 13”.

Finished hat measures approx. 11” in circumference and 10.5

Abbreviation:

  • ch = chain
  • T = turn
  • Sc = single crochet
  • Fhdc = foundation half double crochet
  • Hdc = half double crochet
  • Hdc2tog = half double crochet 2 stitches together
  • Sc2tog = single crochet 2 stitches together
  • Dc = double crochet
  • Mc = magic circle / ring
  • Sk = skip
  • St = Stitch(es)
  • Sl st = slip stitch

Hat

with jelly bean

Row 1: fhdc 36 st, sl st into 1st st to join being careful not to twist (36)

Row 2: ch 1, hdc in each st around, sl st to join (36)

Alternate between red and white every row here on starting with red

on row 3, you will create the ear holes

Row 3: ch 1, hdc 6 st, ch 6, sk 6 st, hdc in 12 st, ch 6, sk 6 st, hdc in last 6 st, sl st to join (36)

Row 4: ch 1, * hdc 4 st, hdc2tog* repeat * to * around, sl st to join (30)

Row 5: ch 1, * hdc 3 st, hdc2tog* repeat * to * around, sl st to join (24)

Row 6-8: ch 1, hdc in each st around, sl st to join (24)

Row 9: ch 1, * hdc in 2 st, hdc2tog* repeat * to * around, sl st to join (18)

Row 10-11: ch 1, hdc in each st around, sl st to join (18)

Row 12: ch 1, * hdc, hdc2tog* repeat * to * around, sl st to join (12)

Row 13-14: ch 1, hdc in each st across, sl st to join (12)

Row 15: ch 1, * hdc, hdc2tog* repeat * to * around, sl st to join (8)

Row 16-20: ch 1, hdc around, sl st to join (8)

Cut yarn and weave in ends.

With jelly bean make a 2” pom pom and attach it to the end of the hat.

Ties:

With jelly bean (make 2)

Ch 43, hdc in the second st from hook and in each st down. Cut yarn leaving a long tail to attach to the hat.

Place each tie in the middle directly below the ear holes and sew them to the hat.

Cut yarn and weave in all ends
