Modern Round Crochet Potholder Free Pattern

If there is one thing that you can say about these crochet pot holders, it would be TEXTURE! Not only is this a round crochet potholder pattern, it has a very modern look and finish.

Traditional hot pads tend to be square in shape, but I thought that it would be a neat change to make some round ones. When I got the idea to create a round potholder, I immediately thought about adding bobble stitches. They make this a really fun pattern and add so much to it.

About the Design of the Modern Round Potholder

When I wanted to design a round potholder, I knew I wanted to give it a different look. After I made these potholders, I went and looked up round crochet pot holder patterns and I couldn’t find anything like mine. There were different designs, but I feel like mine are pretty unique with the texture I gave them using the bobble stitch.

Because you use potholders to handle hot dishes, you want a pretty thick potholder, so this potholder is made up of 2 layers. I decided that 1 layer wasn’t going to be thick enough. I made a front piece that has the bobbles and then crochet the back piece and slip stitch them together to make a double-thick potholder.

I think the bobbles really add to these potholders and take them an extra step farther than a normal square potholder.

If you have a general understanding of crochet terms and stitches, I think that even a beginner, maybe more of a late beginner crocheter could make this round crochet potholder pattern.

A beautiful crochet potholder or even a set of them would make for a great gift for someone. They’d especially make for a great housewarming gift. It’s nice to receive handmade gifts and handmade potholders would be useful for someone who enjoys cooking. They could think about you every time they use them.

What Yarn should you use to Make Potholders?

The answer is cotton yarn! 100% cotton is probably best because other yarns such as acrylic yarn, melts when something hot touches it. Since you use potholders to mess with hot pots and hot pans, you don’t want something that melts. So, cotton yarn works best when it comes to handling hot dishes!

Another great thing about using cotton yarn to make these round potholders is that they are machine washable. If you get them dirty just toss them in the washer and they will be as good as new.

This is a great way to use up some of your yarn stash that you may have laying around and make something that would be useful for your own home.

You could leave the hanger off of them if you don’t want to hang them. I think that they’d be really cute hanging in a kitchen though! You could make different colors to match any kitchen decor. I especially like crocheting them in solid colours so the bobble stitches really pop!

Things you will need:

• Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in Succulent & Camel. I Love This Cotton in Spunky.
• H / 5.00 mm Crochet Hook
• Scissors
• Yarn Needle

Size:

• Each potholder is approx. 6.5” across

Abbreviation / Stitch Key:

• ch = chain
• st = stitch (es)
• sk = skip
• mc = magic circle / magic ring
• sc = single crochet
• dc = double crochet
• sp = space
• sl st = slip stitch
• yo = yarn over
• t = turn

Special Stitch –

Bobble Stitch – *yarn over and insert hook, pull up a loop (as if you were going to do a double crochet), yarn over and pull through 2 loops* repeat * to * 4 more times until you have 6 loops on hook, yarn over and pull through all 6 loops on hook. Bobble stitch made

• You always work a bobble stitch on a wrong side row

Notes:

• You will make 2 pieces, a front piece and a back piece then slip stitch the 2 pieces together.
• On the front piece, you will TURN only on certain rows because bobble stitches have to be worked on the wrong side row, so make sure to pay close attention on each row.

Free Pattern –

Front Piece –

Round 1: 10 dc in mc, sl st into 1st st (10)

Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, sl st into 1st st (20)

Round 3: ch 1, T, * Bobble, 2 sc * repeat * to * around, sl st into 1st st (30)

Round 4: ch 2, T, * dc in 2 st, 2 dc * repeat * to * around, sl st into 1st st (40)

Round 5: ch 1, T, * Bobble, sc in 2 st, 2 sc * repeat * to * around, sl st into 1st st (50)

Round 6: ch 2, T, * dc in 4 st, 2 dc * repeat * to * around, sl st into 1st st (60)

Round 7: ch 1, T, * Bobble, sc in 2 st, bobble, sc, 2 sc* repeat * to * around, sl st into 1st st (70)

Cut yarn and weave in ends.

Back Piece –

Round 1: 10 dc in mc. sl st into 1 st st (10)

Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, sl st into 1st st (20)

Round 3: ch 1, * sc, 2 sc * repeat * to * around, sl st into 1st st (30)

Round 4: ch 2, * dc in 2 st, 2 dc*, repeat * to * around, sl st into 1st st (40)

Round 5: ch 1, * sc in 3 st, 2 sc* repeat * to * around, sl st into 1st st (50)

Round 6: ch 2, * dc in 4 st, 2 dc* repeat * to * around, sl st into 1st st (60)

Round 7: ch 1, * sc in 5 st, 2 sc* repeat * to * around, sl st into 1st st (70)

Do NOT cut the yarn yet.

Lay the 2 pieces together with the wrong sides facing each other. slip stitch the 2 pieces around the edge all the way around until you reach the very last st. Before you slip stitch the last stitches together, chain 10 and then slip stitch the last 2 stitches together to make the hanger.

Cut yarn and weave in all ends.
