A heart is definitely not the easiest thing to crochet a square around. But through a little trial and error, I found a working combination of stitches that would work for this Free Crochet Heart Granny Square Pattern!
I had a friend text me this week wanting to know if I could make a pattern for a granny square around a heart. She already had the heart pattern and to my understanding had them made, but she couldn’t figure out how to go around them in a granny square pattern. So, I gave it a shot and tried to see what I could come up with.
And, guess what….It worked! After pulling my work out a few times and trying different ways to go around it, I came up with these cute squares! I posted them on my Facebook page and everyone said they wanted the pattern, so here we are.
I will say though that the middle heart pattern is not mine, it’s from Sarah Maker and you can find a tutorial for the heart HERE. I will just be showing you how to go around the heart in a granny square pattern.

Go!
I used a 5.5mm / I crochet hook and #4 worsted weight yarn.
Once you have your heart made, let’s get to making the granny square!
To start, Join yarn in the 2nd st to the right of the center sl st. Work all stitches into the back loop only for round 1 only
Round 1: ch 3 (counts as a dc), tr, sk sl st, sk st, tr, dc, ch 1, sk 2 st, hdc, dc, ch 2, dc, hdc, ch 1, sk st, hdc, dc, dc, ch 1, sk st, dc, (tr, ch. 2, tr) in next st, dc, ch 1, hdc, sc, hdc, ch 1, dc, (tr, ch 2, tr) in next st, dc, ch 1, sk 2 st, dc, hdc, hdc, ch 1, sk st, hdc, dc, ch 2, dc, hdc, ch 1, sk 2 st, sl in top of ch 3
After this 1st round, the square may seem a little uneven. You can just stretch it with your hand and the more rows you add the more it will even itself out
Round 2: ch 4 (counts as st and ch 1) [ * 3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1* repeat * to * until ch 2 sp, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch 2 sp, ch 1] repeat [ to ] until you reach last ch 2 sp, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch 2 sp, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch 1 sp, sl st in 3rd ch up of ch 4
Round 3: Ch 3 (counts as a dc), ch 1, [ * 3 dc in ch 1 sp, ch 1* repeat * to * until you reach ch 2 sp, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch 2 sp, ch 1] repeat [ to ] until you reach last ch 2 sp, ( 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch 2 corner, ch 1, * 3 dc in ch 1 sp, ch 1* repeat * to * until you reach end of round, sl st into top of ch 3
ound 4: ch 4 (counts as st and ch 1) [ * 3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1* repeat * to * until ch 2 sp, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch 2 sp, ch 1] repeat [ to ] until you reach last ch 2 sp, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch 2 sp, *ch 1, 3 dc in ch 1 sp* repeat * to * until you reach last ch 1 sp for round, 2 dc in ch 1 sp, sl st in 3rd ch up of ch 4
Repeat round 3 & 4 as many times as you’d like.
