If you are a beginner crocheter and want to make a super quick and easy blanket, then you will want to make this chunky crochet blanket pattern!

This chunky blanket uses not a super bulky yarn, but a #7 Jumbo yarn!  Talk about a super fast crochet project.  Paired with super simple stitches like chain stitches and double crochet stitches, it makes for a super easy pattern that is perfect for someone who is new to crochet.

It is made from a 1 row repeat row and you just change the colors every few rows.

About This Free Crochet Blanket Pattern

I used a fun yarn from Lion Brand called Wool-Ease ‘Wow!’ yarn.  It is a #7 Jumbo yarn that is super soft and cozy.  It is a 80% Acrylic, 20% Wool blend yarn.

I actually found my ‘wow’ yarn on clearance at Hobby Lobby for $2.74 a skein when it is marked $10.99 regular price, talk about a bargain.  If there is one thing that I love, that is a sale, but when you have a sale on yarn, I’m in Heaven!

I bought 8 skeins in cream and 5 skeins in aqua and had 2 skeins of aqua left after I finished the blanket. So, in total I used 11 skeins of yarn to crochet this cozy blanket.  In total, that is around 730 yards of this #7 jumbo weight yarn.

You will need a large crochet hook to use with this yarn, I had a Q / 15 mm hook and it worked great.  Any size of crochet hook that is close to this size should work.  I listed the gauge below, but it is not super relevant to this pattern unless you are wanting to make a blanket this exact same size.

This crochet throw blanket is approx. 48” x 52” so it is the perfect cozy throw or lap size blanket.

And, let me tell you, working with this jumbo yarn is no joke!  It is an arm work out.  If you need to, you might want to take breaks quite often when working with this yarn to keep your hands from getting so tired.

Tips for Crocheting This Chunky Throw Blanket

  • Weave in your ends as you go!  This yarn is so big that weaving in your ends can be a challenge.  I’d highly recommend crocheting over them as you work your blanket to make it easier.  It’s kind of hard to use a yarn needle since this yarn is so thick, I used my crochet hook mostly to pull the ends under stitches and to weave them in.
  • Make any size blanket.  You can easily make a larger or smaller blanket by simply adjusting your starting chain and adding or decreasing the number of rows that you crochet.
  • Be Creative!  You can do any colors instead of using this cream and aqua colors.  You can also do a solid color blanket instead of doing stripes if you prefer.

Chunky Blanket Q & A

Can I use a different weight of yarn to make this blanket?

You could totally switch out this #7 Jumbo weight yarn for either a #5 bulky weight yarn or a #6 super chunky yarn and still have a blanket that works up super fast and is cozy.

You will just have to adjust your starting foundation chain or else your blanket will turn out a different size than mine.

Can I use Bernat Blanket Yarn to make this blanket?

You could definitely use Bernat Blanket yarn for this specific blanket pattern. You might just have to adjust your hook size.  The recommended hook size to use with Bernat Blanket yarn is a L / 8.00mm crochet hook, so it is a much smaller hook than I used with the #7 Jumbo yarn.

What other yarns can you substitute?

There are other options that you can use for this free pattern like Bernat Blanket yarn, Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, Lion Brand Hometown, and even Lion Brand Mandala Thick & Quick.

Can beginner crocheters crochet this blanket?

Yes, I would definitely say that this is an easy crochet pattern that even beginner crocheters could make!  You don’t have to be intimidated of crocheting a blanket, because all it is a a big rectangle.  This blanket is made up of a very common and basic crochet stitch that is called the double crochet.

If you are a beginner, this is the best crochet stitch to make a blanket with because it is super easy stitch that you usually learn at the beginning of your crocheting journey.

What is the best stitch for a chunky crochet blanket?

When trying to work with bigger yarn like chunky yarn and super bulky yarn, I’d definitely recommend with sticking with your basic crochet stitches like single crochets and double crochets as they are the easiest to work with this thickness of yarn.
