There are 5 different sizes in this easy crochet hat pattern.  Preemie all the way through 12 months.  Preemie, Newborn, 0-3 months, 3-6 months and 6-12 months.

This pattern is for a basic and simple baby hat.  You could easily even dress this hat up some and add a pom pom to it.  Or, if you’d rather, check out my pattern for my Baby Bear Hats HERE!

How Hard is it to Make a Crochet Baby Hat?

This pattern is very easy to crochet! I’d say that this a great pattern for even beginner crocheters!

This pattern consist of basic stitches like the half double crochet and single crochet.

When I first started crocheting, some of my favorite things to make were baby items. That included crochet hats and headbands for babies. I soon fell in love with crocheting baby blankets too.

Most baby hats are made with basic crochet stitches, this makes them easy to learn and it also makes for a quick project that you can quickly finish and feel accomplished.

What Yarn is Best to Use for Baby Hats?

I chose to use I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby, but any similar worsted / medium weight yarn would work just fine. I love how soft that the I Love This Yarn is, it’s perfect for babies!

Another yarn that would work great for these is Brava Worsted from We crochet.  It is very similar in weight and feel to I Love This Yarn.  Plus, It comes in so many different colors.

These are 2 of my favorite yarns that I would choose to make this free crochet hat pattern in.

Every time I make one, I love to use a different color of yarn to see what it will look like.

The colors that I have made so far are all I Love This Yarn in the colors –

  • Pink
  • Soft Blue
  • Blossmopolis
  • Mango
  • Brown
  • Amethyst
  • Keylime

  1. I make hats to donate to the NICU and use this pattern more often than any other. It’s fast, easy and uses one of my very favorite yarns, I Love This Yarn. I have one question though. The “seam” in the back always slants to the left because of the HDC. Is there any way to avoid that? I have gone online and found several supposed solutions but none are keeping it straight (ones that come close create more bulk). I have also done it as a continuous round (no chain or slip stitch) but not totally happy with that either. I just wanted to see if you have any recommendations.
I have made a lot of your patterns (especially for afghans and hats) and they are all wonderful. I enjoy reading through your website too. Thank you for all you do!

    1. I alway place the first hdc of the round into the same stitch that I slip stitched into to join the round, this tends to keep the seem a bit straighter. Hope this helps!
