How to Half Double Crochet – Crochet Stitch Tutorial

I’ve been updating my blog recently and I decided to add some stitch tutorials for the basic stitches of crochet. The Half Double Crochet (also shortened to HDC) would definitely be on my list of basic, must learn crochet stitches!

If I had to rank them, I’d say the ones you want to make sure to learn are –

1. Single Crochet
2. Half Double Crochet
3. Double Crochet

By just knowing these 3 stitches, you can make a whole variety of different things!

Here’s what the HDC stitch looks like –

What can you make with the Half Double Crochet?

So many different things can be made with this stitch! From scarves, blankets, washcloths and potholders to sweaters, hats and shawls. The possibilities are endless with this stitch! It will be a stitch that you use time after time when crocheting.

How to half Double Crochet –

For this stitch you can chain any number of stitches that you would like.

To make a Half Double Crochet –

Step 1: yarn over

Step 2: insert your crochet hook into next stitch (for your very 1st HDC of the row, it will be the 3rd chain from your hook)

Step 3: yarn over

Step 4: pull the yarn through the chain stitch (also said to pull up a loop) (3 loops on hook)

Step 5: yarn over and pull through all 3 loops

Half double crochet complete

Repeat steps 1-5 in each chain stitch across

This is what it should look like after your first row

Row 2: turn your work, chain 2, work a HDC into each st

This is what it should look like after you finish a few rows –

And, after you continue and work many rows, it should look like this
