Chunky yarn and knitting, best combination in the world.  So, before I made this hat I hadn’t ever used any of Lion Brands Wool-Ease Thick and Quick.  I know, I don’t get out much, right?  😉  (I mainly shop at Hobby Lobby and they don’t carry it.)

We had went to a Joann about a hour away and as I was looking at all the yarn and I spotted this yarn.    Well, ok, maybe I spotted the sale sign in front of the yarn.   I thought, “I have to make some hats.”  It’s a 80% acrylic and 20% wool blend yarn and is super chunky and cozy.   Of course, I’m photographing these hats in July, in Oklahoma and I can tell you that they are very warm hats 🙂  But seriously,  if you need hats that are thick and warm for the cold winter winds, this one is perfect!

1 skein makes 1 hat and pom.  I used the solid colors, so if your using a print or metallic I’m not sure if you would have enough for the pom.

So, enough chatter from me, let’s get to the pattern!

Things you will need:

Special Stitches:

  • ssk = slip slip knit

There is a great tutorial for that here if you don’t know how to ssk.

Gauge:

  • 10 st x 16 r = 4”

Go!

Cast on 48 st.  I use the long tail cast on.  Join to knit in the round.  Place st marker

Rnd 1-6: *k 2, p 2* repeat * to * around (48)

Rnd 7-26: k around (48)

Rnd 27: *ssk, k 6* repeat * to * around (42)

Rnd 28: *ssk, k 5* repeat * to * around (36)

Rnd 29: *ssk, k 4* repeat * to * around (30)

Rnd 30: *ssk, k 3* repeat * to * around (24)

Rnd 31: *ssk, k 2* repeat * to* around (18)

Rnd 32: *ssk, k 1* repeat * to * around (12)

Rnd 33: ssk around (6)

Cut yarn and place on yarn needle.  Draw though the last 6 stitches and pull tight.  Tie a knot and weave in ends.

Now, make your pom pom and attach to your hat.  Or, you can skip it.  The hat looks great even without the pom pom.

Happy knitting y’all!!!
