This messy bun beanie is super quick to make.  This is a great project for a beginner or even a simple project for a more advanced crocheter.

I love projects that I can do in the car and this beanie is one of them.  It takes me about an hour to make one, so these are perfect for last minute gifts.  I used I Love This Chunky yarn.  The Pic above is the color Peacocktails.  I Love This Chunky is a #5 Bulky yarn and comes in quite a few different colors.

Things you will need:

  • 1 skein of I Love This Chunky
  • I / 5.50 mm Hook
  • Yarn Needle

Abbreviation:

  • ch = chain
  • dc = double crochet
  • blsc = back loop single crochet
  • Sl st = slip stitch

Gauge:

  • 10 st x 6 r = 4”

Make sure to use correct hook to obtain the correct gauge.

Notes:

On rounds 1-9 I use a tall chain.   You can chain 2,

But I like the look of a tall chain, it helps keep the

Spots where you join with a slip stitch

less noticeable.

On a tall chain, you just pull up your loop on your

hook to the height of a double crochet and pull

the yarn through.

Go!

Ch. 20, sl st into 1st ch to form a ring

If you would like, you can use a ponytail holder instead of ch. 20 it would make the opening stretch wider, but I have allowed a good bit of room.

Rnd 1: tall ch,  24 dc in ring.  Sl st into 1st dc of rnd. (24)

Rnd 2: tall ch, *dc in 1  st, 2 dc in next st* repeat * to * around.  Sl st into 1st dc of rnd (36)

Rnd 3: tall ch, * dc in 2 st, 2 dc in next st* repeat * to * around.  Sl st into 1st dc of rnd (48)

Rnd 4-9: tall ch, dc in each st around.  Sl st into 1st dc of the rnd. (48)

Rnd 10-13: ch 1, blsc in each st around. (48)

Cut yarn and weave in ends.
