This is one of those patterns that I have made for years and only had a few notes scribbled down about it, that probably only I could understand. Of course, the past little bit I haven’t really been knitting as much as I have been crocheting, so I haven’t been in any hurry to get this pattern written out and posted. But, I finally decided it was time to get it on my blog, so here y’all go!

For this particular pattern, I used my favorite decreasing method for hats… the slip slip knit. It makes a perfect swirl up to the very top of the hat and helps to evenly bind off and round the top. Pattern

Things you will need:

  • I Love This Yarn
  • Size 9 / 5.5 mm 10” circular needles or 4 DPN
  • Stitch Marker
  • Yarn Needle

Special Stitches:

  • ssk = slip slip knit (View my Youtube tutorial Here)

Gauge:

  • 16 st x 22 r = 4”

Make sure to use the correct needles to obtain the correct gauge to ensure a proper fit.

Sizing chart:

  • Preemie – 9’’ circumference, 4’’ tall
  • Newborn –11’’ circumference, 5’’ tall
  • 0-6 Months –14’’ circumference, 6’’ tall
  • 6-12 Months –17’’ circumference, 6.5’’ tall

Preemie:

Cast on 36 stitches. Join to knit in the round.

Row 1-4: * k 2, p 2* repeat * to * around (36)

Row 5-15: k around (36)

Row 16: * ssk, k 4* repeat * to * around (30)

Row 17: * ssk, k 3* repeat * to * around (24)

Row 18: * ssk, k 2* repeat * to * around (18)

Row 19: * ssk, k 1* repeat * to * around (12)

Row 20: ssk around (6)

Cut yarn leaving a long tail. Pull tail through the 6 stitches and weave in ends.

Newborn:

Cast on 44 stitches. Join to knit in the round.

Row 1-5: * k 2, p 2* repeat * to * around (44)

Row 6-19: k around (44)

Row 20: * ssk, k 9* repeat * to * around (40)

Row 21: * ssk, k 8* repeat * to * around (36)

Row 22: * ssk, k 7* repeat * to * around (32)

Row 23: * ssk, k 6* repeat * to * around (28)

Row 24: * ssk, k 5* repeat * to * around (24)

Row 25: * ssk, k 4* repeat * to * around (20)

Row 26: * ssk, k 3* repeat * to * around (16)

Row 27: * ssk, k 2* repeat * to * around (12)

Row 28: * ssk, k 1* repeat * to * around (8)

Row 29: ssk around (4)

Cut yarn leaving a long tail. Pull tail through the 4 stitches and weave in ends.

0-6 Months:

Cast on 52 stitches. Join to knit in the round.

Row 24: * ssk, k 11* repeat * to * around (48)

Row 25: * ssk, k 10* repeat * to * around (44)

Row 26: * ssk, k 9* repeat * to * around (40)

Row 27: * ssk, k 8* repeat * to * around (36)

Row 28: * ssk, k 7* repeat * to * around (32)

Row 29: * ssk, k 6* repeat * to * around (28)

Row 30: * ssk, k 5* repeat * to * around (24)
