If you’ve been wanting to add beautiful texture to your crochet projects, the cluster stitch is a perfect stitch to do just that. It’s surprisingly a simple stitch to learn, even for beginners!
It’s a super easy, 1 row repeat stitch that I’m sure you will use time and time again for different crochet projects!

The cluster stitch is ideal for blankets, scarves, dishcloths, and any project where you want to add a little bit of extra texture.
To do the cluster stitch you only need to know how to do 3 basic crochet stitches. They are, the chain stitch, half double crochet and slip stitch. If you know those 3 crochet basics, then you can definitely do the cluster stitch.

When I learn a new stitch, I love to work it up in a swatch that will be a good size for a dishcloth. This way I can practice a new stitch while also having a useful product with the finished end piece.
If you are more of a visual learner and would like to see a video tutorial for crocheting the cluster stitch, you can watch the step by step video tutorial below. Keep on scrolling for the written instructions for this fun stitch.

How to Crochet the Cluster Stitch
Terminology is in US terms
Skill Level: Beginner
Things you will need:
- Any yarn with corresponding hook will work (I’m using a #4 worsted weight yarn & an I / 5.50mm Crochet Hook)
- Yarn Needle / Tapestry Needle
- Scissors
Abbreviation / Stitch Key:
- ch = chain
- st = stitch (es)
- sk = skip
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- mc = magic circle / ring
- sp = space
- yo = yarn over
- sl st = slip stitch
- t = turn
Notes:
- The chain multiple for the cluster stitch is 2 + 1
- You can start with any odd number of chains for this stitch
Cluster Stitch Pattern
Chain any odd number of stitches. For my swatch I’m was turning it into a washcloth so I start with 29 chain stites.
Row 1: In the second ch st from your hook, * hdc, sl st * repeat * to * across
Row 2: ch 1, t, * hdc, sl st * repeat * to * across
*** You will always start each row with a half double crochet and end with a slip stitch. Knowing this will help you to not skip or add any extra stitches.
Continue repeating row 2 until the piece is the desired length!

And that is how easy it is to crochet the cluster stitch!
